Many hotels in Quebec are envisioning a rather “quiet” school break, according to the Quebec Hotel Association (AHQ), based on a survey of its members.
Reservations are “generally down” compared to the same period last year, while spring break is taking place this year at the same time for the majority of elementary and secondary schools in the province, says the AHQ.
According to its flash survey carried out last week, 84 per cent of the 75 establishments surveyed said they were experiencing “a stable or weaker situation” than in 2025.
“More specifically, 40 per cent talk about a spring break comparable to last year; 43 per cent consider it calmer; and only 16 per cent mention a better performance,” the association said in a statement Monday.
However, this situation could change over the next few days and eventually give way to a higher occupancy rate than expected, says AHQ CEO Véronyque Tremblay.
“It can change because we expect to have a lot of last-minute bookings with the good weather, in particular. All of this can move a lot,” she said.
There are many reasons why many hotel establishments claim to have lower booking rates than last year, says Tremblay.
But last-minute bookings have become more and more common since the post-pandemic period, says the head of the AHQ.
The average booking rate is 50 per cent for the current week. The Laurentians and Quebec City were the two regions with the highest rates according to survey responses, at 69 per cent and 60 per cent, respectively.
