Large hole prompts full closure of Châteauguay Bridge

A section of a bridge in Châteauguay collapsed on Wednesday morning, prompting its complete closure.

Photos posted to social media by Châteauguay Mayor Éric Allard show a gaping hole right in the middle of a lane of traffic on the Sauvagine Bridge, which crosses the Châteauguay River.

There were no injuries, the mayor said.

“I would like to remind you that this infrastructure is the responsibility of the ministry and is subject to regular inspections,” Allard wrote on Facebook. “That said, I sincerely hope that today’s event will accelerate the steps already underway at the ministry so that the bridge can be completely rebuilt as quickly as possible. Our community deserves reliable and sustainable infrastructure.

“I am well aware of the inconvenience this closure is causing for many citizens. I thank you for your patience and cooperation. I invite you to plan your trips accordingly and to remain attentive to official communications from the City.”
