Surrey will host free public watch parties for FIFA matches

With 100 days to go until the FIFA World Cup arrives in Vancouver, the City of Surrey announced on Tuesday that it will organize live public screenings of the matches this summer.

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke says that these screenings will be free and take place at Surrey Civic Plaza, the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, and South Surrey Athletic Park.

“Each site will feature large screen live match broadcasts, food trucks, live entertainment, and community LED soccer activities,” Locke said.

The fan zone in Cloverdale will be indoors, while the other two venues are going to feature tents, providing shade for seating areas.

She adds that Surrey is a “soccer city” and these fan zones are a celebration of the city’s love of the game.

“Fans can come to Surrey Civic Plaza for an extra special celebration to cheer Canada on and kick off the World Cup in true Surrey style.”

On June 12, Team Canada will play its first match in Toronto. The opponent has yet to be determined.

Locke made the announcement alongside Surrey city councillors and Whitecaps club ambassador Carl Valentine.

She says that the watch parties will also support local businesses.

“Our council is committed to creating safe, affordable, and accessible family-friendly activities across our city,” she added.
