Burnaby police asking public’s help in identifying sexual assault suspect

Burnaby RCMP are asking the public for assistance in identifying the suspect in a sexual assault investigation last month.

Police have shared images and a video showing a man whom investigators believe is the perpetrator, shortly before the assault took place.

The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. on Feb 6 near Lobley Park on Marlborough Avenue in Burnaby.

The female victim told officers that while she was walking through the park, an unknown man grabbed her from behind, put one hand on her mouth, and touched her groin and buttocks.

“The woman fought back against the man; he then ran off through the park towards Marlborough Avenue,” police said in a written statement.

After officers responded to the scene, they searched the area with the assistance of police dogs, but weren’t able to find the suspect.

The woman, however, was able to describe the man as 5’8 to 5’11 tall, medium build, between 30 and 40 years old and wearing all black.

“We are asking the public to take a close look at these photos and video,” said Cpl. Laura Hirst. “If you know this person or recognize him, we are asking you to call our investigators.”

The Burnaby RCMP’s High Risk Offender Unit is conducting the investigation.

Witnesses can contact police at 604-646-9999 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
