Lawyer Stéphane Handfield wants to run for the PQ again

Lawyer Stéphane Handfield, who has worked for 30 years in immigration law, wishes to once again represent the Parti Québécois (PQ) in the general elections next October.

The PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon announced Friday morning that Handfield will be a candidate for the party’s nomination in the riding of Masson, in Lanaudière.

Handfield has been active in the PQ for several years. He was a PQ candidate in the 2022 elections, again in Masson, where he finished second with 18.24 per cent of the vote.

For the past three years, Handifeld has been the co-spokesperson on immigration for the sovereigntist party.

In March 2025, the lawyer announced he was ending his private practice.

“It was a difficult but well-considered decision. My assessment from a year ago remains the same. Our immigration system is broken,” Handifeld argued at a press conference in Montreal on Friday.

“I chose to run for the Parti Québécois, in particular to fix this broken immigration system,” he added, alongside St-Pierre Plamondon.

In recent weeks, the PQ has presented several candidates in different regions in preparation for the election scheduled for next fall.
