A man was taken to hospital in critical condition early Sunday after he was found unconscious on a street in Montreal’s east end, police say.
Montreal police were called around 4:45 a.m. after a citizen reported a man who was possibly unconscious on St-Catherine Street East near Fafard Street in the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.
When officers arrived, they quickly located the victim, who was not conscious, said Johany Charland, a media relations officer with the Montreal police service.
“The man was taken care of by the first responders from the Montreal fire department and the paramedics from Urgences-santé,” Charland said.
Police officers then noticed signs of violence on the victim’s upper body, she said.
The man was transported to hospital in critical condition for reasons that remain to be determined.
Police set up a perimeter in the area to preserve potential evidence. Investigators have been notified and may go to the scene to analyze it and try to understand the causes and circumstances surrounding the incident.
They will also interview possible witnesses and attempt to locate any surveillance cameras, Charland said.
The investigation is ongoing.
