Altercation outside Montreal-area high school: Students could be arrested or fined, police warn

Police in Repentigny are warning that students of a high school at the centre of a police investigation are at risk of being arrested or ticketed if their alleged “reprehensible behaviour” continues.

That’s the message from the Service de police de la Ville de Repentigny (SPVR) in a letter to parents of children at L’Horizon high school, just outside Montreal.

A viral video from an incident outside the school last Tuesday reportedly shows students, on their lunch break, pushing a convenience store security guard to the ground.

It’s not exactly clear what led to that specific interaction, which Repentigny police are investigating, but business owners near the school are now speaking out and expressing concern about the students.

“To date, police interventions have been primarily limited to warnings and awareness campaigns. While maintaining a preventative and problem-solving approach, given the repeated incidents of incivility reported, our teams will issue tickets or make arrests in the coming weeks if behaviour continues to violate the rules,” SPVR deputy director Patrick Gaudreault told parents in a letter Monday.

In the letter, Gaudreault writes students have been demonstrating “concerning,” “inappropriate,” and “reprehensible” behaviour in the vicinity of the school.

“Although these situations occur outside the school grounds, they remain concerning as they impact the safety of young people and the peace and quiet of the neighbourhood,” he said.

“The school and the police service are working together to ensure a safe environment for everyone. We rely on the support of families to prevent further incidents and avoid the need for more restrictive measures.”

More coming.
