Montreal freezing rain: REM ending service earlier than usual

The upcoming ice storm is prompting Montreal’s light-rail network to adjust its schedule.

With freezing rain expected to begin in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the REM will end earlier than usual on Tuesday night.

This will allow for a de-icing product to be applied, according to Pulsar, the REM’s operator.

The last departures from Gare Centrale station, in each direction, are scheduled for 11 p.m.

“This deployment time takes into account both the end of the Canadiens game at the Bell Centre and the expected arrival of freezing‑rain precipitation later in the night,” the REM website reads.

In anticipation of the freezing rain, the REM will run throughout the night from Tuesday to Wednesday “to prevent ice buildup on the catenary, the network’s overhead electrical line.”

Train frequency will be modified Wednesday, Pulsar adds. There will be a five‑minute interval across the entire network “to reduce excessive ice accumulation on the catenary and ensure reliable service.”
