Thousands affected by power outages amid freezing rain across Quebec

Large-scale power outages are currently impacting several regions across Quebec, with over 61,000 customers affected as freezing rain swept through Southern Quebec Wednesday afternoon.

At 5:15 p.m., 57,932 addresses were without power, with Lanaudière and the Capitale-Nationale regions taking the worst hit.

In Lanaudière, 29,962 addresses without power, while 11,235 addresses were affected in the Quebec City area, according to Hydro-Québec. The Outauouais region also saw widespread outages touching 9,541 addresses.

In Montreal, 2,834 customers were without power. The Laurentians region saw 1,908 addresses affected.

Many schools and universities were cancelled in Greater Montreal Wednesday amid an orange alert for freezing rain was issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

About 20-30 mm of freezing rain was expected starting late Wednesday and through the night.

Authorities are advising against non-essential travel and caution while walking on side walks and streets over the next few days.
