Ice storm causes widespread school closures, power outages and REM disruption in Quebec

An ice storm across southern Quebec left more than 175,000 addresses without electricity Thursday morning, forcing school closures across several service centres and disrupting transit on the Réseau express métropolitain (REM).

At 6:24 a.m., Power outages were concentrated in several regions, including about 80,540 addresses in Montérégie and roughly 33,972 in Montreal. Additional outages were reported in Laval (4,315), the Laurentians (13,743) and Lanaudière (24).

Several school service centres, boards and individual schools announced closures due to the storm.

Transit was also affected. At 5:10 a.m., the Réseau express métropolitain announced a service interruption between Brossard and Gare Centrale stations due to weather conditions. Service resumption is undetermined, with the next update expected at noon.
