Abbotsford worker rescues kittens seconds from being crushed in trash compactor

Some lucky kittens only have eight lives left after coming within moments of being crushed in a trash compactor, the BC SPCA says.

A worker at an Abbotsford waste management facility was loading cardboard into the compactor when he heard the sound of faint cries.

He dug through the pile where he found two tiny kittens buried in the cardboard.

He brought the kittens to the SPCA, returned to work, and then discovered a third kitten.

Three days later, he found two more kittens at the facility. The SPCA was closed for the day, so he took them home to keep them safe before bringing them to the shelter the next day.

They were so tiny that BC SPCA foster volunteers needed to bottle-feed them with kitten milk replacer.

“All the kittens had significant discharge in their eyes as a result of upper respiratory infections,” said Sarah Ringer-Vinnard, manager of the BC SPCA Abbotsford.

“They have all received antibiotics and have fully recovered.”

Ringer-Vennard says the kittens — named Dave, Steven, Dorito, Annie, and Cheeto — all have their own personalities. They will be available for adoption in around six weeks.
