Suspicious early-morning vehicle fire in Montreal’s east end under investigation

Montreal police are investigating a suspicious vehicle fire in the city’s Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles borough early Sunday morning.

Police say they were notified by the Montreal fire department at around 3:55 a.m. about a vehicle on fire on a street near Olivier-Lejeune Avenue.

When officers arrived on scene, the fire had already been brought under control by firefighters, and the vehicle was located on the street.

Fire officials told police that a window of the vehicle appeared to have been smashed before the blaze broke out.

According to initial reports, more than one suspect was seen approaching the vehicle. The window was reportedly broken before the fire was started on the passenger side. The suspects fled the scene before police arrived.

The vehicle sustained significant damage, but no damage was reported to nearby properties. No injuries were reported.

Given the potentially criminal nature of the incident, the investigation has been taken over by the SPVM arson unit.

The scene was secured to preserve evidence, and investigators will work to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire, including reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with possible witnesses.

The vehicle will be towed for forensic analysis. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
