Montreal police are investigating after a 26-year-old woman was fatally struck by a train Tuesday morning in the Mile End area.
The collision happened shortly after 9 a.m. beneath the Van Horne Ave. overpass, near St-Dominique Street. Firefighters attempted life-saving measures, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police spokesperson Florence Stafford, officers have met with witnesses, and preliminary information suggests the incident was accidental. Investigators secured the area as they examined the circumstances surrounding the death.
Officials say it is still unknown why the woman was on the tracks. The stretch of railway, however, is known to be used by pedestrians even though no official crossing exists.
Tuesday’s death echoes a similar tragedy in 2022, when another woman was killed while crossing tracks nearby, an incident that sparked calls for safer pedestrian access in the neighbourhood.
