Section of East 1st Ave at HWY 1 closed Sunday, Monday

Heads up to drivers: a stretch of East 1st Avenue at Highway 1 will be closed until Monday evening as crews complete repaving work, according to the City of Vancouver.

From 5 a.m. Sunday until 9 p.m. Monday, East 1st will be completely closed in both directions between Boundary Road and Rupert Street.

In addition, ramps to and from the highway at East 1st will also be closed, with the exception of the eastbound off-ramp. Boundary Road between Graveley Street and East 2nd Avenue is also closed.

Pedestrians won’t be affected, the city says.

“Drivers are advised to plan ahead, use alternate routes, and expect delays in the area, especially those who typically access or exit Highway 1 via East 1st Avenue,” it said.

According to the city, the repaving is part of a series of infrastructure upgrades along this corridor.

“Upgrades include new curb ramps and improved pedestrian crossings between Rupert Street and Boundary Road; a new dedicated left-turn lane from East 1st Avenue to Valiant Street; and a new centre median to replace one temporarily removed for FortisBC work,” it said.

Line-painting and other final work are expected to take place later in the month.
