Dozens of firefighters are working to bring a fire under control in downtown Montreal on Monday afternoon.

The Montreal Fire Department (SIM) confirmed on X that a building fire is underway at the intersection of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Milton Street.

Traffic is blocked within the block bounded by Ontario, Saint-Dominique, Prince Arthur, and Saint-Urbain Streets.

A police officer interviewed on site by La Presse Canadienne indicated that the block would remain closed for “at least two or three hours.” “It’s a big fire,” he noted.

A large plume of smoke blanketed the neighborhood after the fire broke out, affecting air quality. Air quality dropped from good to poor during the 1 p.m. reading from the downtown Montreal station.
