Montreal gas prices remain above $2 per litre due to conflict overseas

Montreal drivers hoping to start the week with some relief at the pump were greeted with more of the same on Monday.

Gas prices in Montreal remained hovering above $2 per litre, maintaining pressure on car owners.

Several gas stations across the island flashed a price of 202.9 cents per litre, according to the new interactive tool by Régie Essence Québec.

The price at the pump hit $2 last week due to market speculation tied to the conflict overseas involving Iran, Israel and the U.S., experts say.

Rising tensions around key shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, have pushed crude oil prices higher, increasing costs for gasoline and jet fuel.

Iran’s grip on the strait, through which a fifth of the world’s oil is shipped in peacetime, has caused oil prices to surge and shaken the world economy.

Brent crude oil, the international standard, rose to $109 US in early Monday spot trading, about 50 per cent higher than when the war started
