Royal West Academy gets first crossing guard at intersection notorious for accidents

After more than a year of tireless campaigning, parents in Montreal West are celebrating a long-awaited victory.

Starting Tuesday, a crossing guard is being stationed at the intersection of Westminster Avenue South and Ainslie Road, right outside Royal West Academy.

This marks the first time a crossing guard has been posted at the busy corner, which has been a concern for parents since 14-year-old Royal West student Charlie Shein was struck in November 2024.

There have been multiples incidents since then, including injuries to other students, fuelling the parents’ push for safety.

In February 2025, when two more students were hit in separate accidents, parents intensified their calls for action, launching a petition to Quebec’s National Assembly.

Initially, rules stated that crossing guards weren’t assigned near high schools, but after a review, officials agreed the intersection warranted special attention.

Montreal teenager Charlie Shein is not relenting.

The 14-year-old is continuing to push for increased safety measures at a Montreal West crosswalk more than one month after being struck by a car.
