Man injured in grizzly bear attack near Vanderhoof

A man was taken to the hospital after being attacked by a grizzly bear near Vanderhoof, 100 kilometres west of Prince George, on Monday evening, the BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) says.

The COS says the man was walking two off-leash dogs on his farm property around 5 p.m. when the bear attacked.

“He was able to scramble under a barbed wire fence, and the bear disengaged and ran off,” the service said.

“The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his leg and received medical treatment in the hospital.”

COS and RCMP officers searched the area but were unable to find the bear.

“Based on the location and the circumstances surrounding the attack, officers have determined the attack was defensive in nature, and there was no continued threat to public safety,” the COS said.

Trail cameras have been set up around the area.

In November, the BC Wildlife Federation said conflicts between grizzlies and humans have been increasing dramatically ever since the grizzly hunt was terminated in B.C. in 2017.

Any grizzly sightings should be reported to the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line at 1-877-952-7277.
