Toronto and much of the GTA is under a special weather statement, calling for 20 millimetres of rain in the region.
Environment and Climate Change Canada issued the advisory on Wednesday and says the rain is expected to continue into Thursday, along with the possibility of some thunderstorms.
The national weather agency warns the ground, which is already near saturation, has a limited capacity to absorb the rain.
“Portions of the region have received significant rainfall amounts over the last few days. As a result, any further rainfall could have significant impacts. Rainfall warnings may be issued for some regions,” the statement warns.
With the heavy rain, the national weather agency says the heavy rain will likely lead to pooling on roads and in low-lying areas.
Several areas of the GTA, including Toronto, are under a yellow advisory for fog.
“Areas of dense fog have developed mainly for areas near the Lake Ontario shore. The fog is expected to dissipate this afternoon,” the advisory states.
The national weather service said travel will likely be hazardous in some areas as visibility becomes suddenly reduced at times.
