Rainy stretch in Montreal raises risk of localized flooding

A special weather statement is in effect for Montreal as a series of weather systems continues to bring steady rain to the region, adding to already saturated ground conditions and increasing the risk of localized flooding.

Environment officials say another rainfall event is expected Thursday, with 15 to 25 millimetres of rain possible. Showers are expected to begin in the afternoon and continue into the evening, with additional rain overnight. Temperatures will reach a high of 12 C, with a 30 per cent chance of showers this morning before the more organized rain moves in. Fog patches are expected to dissipate this morning.

Tonight, showers will continue with an expected 5 to 10 millimetres of additional rainfall and a low of 9 C. Fog patches may develop again in the evening before clearing overnight.

Conditions are expected to remain unsettled Friday, with a 60 per cent chance of showers early in the morning before skies begin to clear around midday. The high will be 17 C with a UV index of 5 (moderate).

Saturday will bring a brief break in the rain with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 22 C, but conditions will deteriorate again Saturday night as rain returns.

Sunday is expected to bring another significant rainfall event, with a high of 6 C and continued rain into the night, when temperatures drop to minus 2 C with additional showers possible.

Looking ahead, cooler conditions will follow early next week, with a mix of sun and cloud Monday and a chance of flurries and a high of 3 C. More unsettled weather is possible again Tuesday and Wednesday.

Officials warn that with rivers already running high and the ground saturated, additional rainfall could lead to rising water levels. Water pooling is possible in low-lying and poorly drained areas, and near rivers and streams. Residents are advised to remain cautious and monitor changing conditions.
