Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette assures that the support of Éric Duhaime’s Conservatives for his proposed constitution is sufficient for him to move forward.
“These are the conditions that the premier stated, and so I understand that these conditions have been met,” he said on the radio program “Tout un matin” on Ici Première Tuesday morning.
A few weeks ago, Premier Christine Fréchette said that at least the support of an opposition party was needed for Simon Jolin-Barrette’s constitution to be adopted.
Since then, the Conservative Party of Quebec has raised its hand. However, Éric Duhaime’s political party is represented by only one member of the National Assembly, namely former CAQ minister Maïté Blanchette Vézina.
During her party’s caucus last week, Christine Fréchette did not specify whether this support was sufficient, stating that it was necessary to “work on support” in order to have “the broadest possible support”.
All other opposition parties oppose this constitution. It is also far from being a consensus within civil society.
The parliamentary session resumes on Tuesday. Christine Fréchette intends to bring back all the bills, including the one on the constitution, that were left unaddressed during the prorogation.
