11 teachers’ licences revoked at Montreal’s Bedford elementary school

Quebec’s Ministry of Education has revoked the licences of 11 teachers implicated in the scandal at the Bedford Elementary School in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood.

The ministry had suspended their licences in October 2024 and then revoked some of their licences last fall.

In an email to CityNews, a spokesperson for the ministry confirmed that the decision was made based on the findings of the investigative committee’s reports.

The decisions were currently under appeal, the ministry added, declining to comment further.

In October 2024, then-Education Minister Bernard Drainville suspended 11 teachers following an investigation which painted the school as having a toxic climate of fear and intimidation imposed by a clique of teachers.

The ministry had said at the time that the report showed troubling facts about actions and behaviours that raise concerns about the physical and psychological safety of students at the Côte-des-Neiges school, including physical and psychological abuse of students and staff, like yelling, humiliation, intimidation, insubordination and incivilities.

The incident sparked concerns from worried parents and triggered investigations into other Montreal schools.
