‘Just keep going’: Vancouver comedian to spend 24 hours on stage fundraising for charity

The marathon comedy event of the season will return to Vancouver Friday.

Local comedian Graham Clark is bringing back his 24-Hours of Stand-Up fundraiser for a fourth straight year.

He explains that the show revolves around a full-day performance.

“I’m on stage the whole time — aside from bathroom breaks,” Clark told 1130 NewsRadio.

“And I have a team of very, very funny comedians just constantly writing jokes that I deliver. And it gets crazier and crazier as the hours go on. I know people who are showing up at 6 a.m. to come see the show. There’s some people that stay the whole 24 hours.”

Last year, the event raised $4,500 for Filipino BC. This year, partial proceeds from the show will go to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre.

Clark says the charity is always his first pick.

“They provide services for women that are unhoused, or between housing, and they do all sorts of great work with providing stuff that they need, be it [cosmetics] or clothing or support. They just do it all.”

After four years, Clark says he finds it easier to sustain 24 hours of comedy than to stop.

“It’s one of those weird things where you keep going and then your brain just is like, ‘Well, we’ll just keep going. You’re up for 24 hours, so we’ll just go — let’s go 36.’ So, winding down is one of the hard parts.”

Graham Clark’s 24-Hours of Stand-Up begins at the Little Mountain Gallery in Gastown at 8 p.m. on May 22. Tickets are available.
