A new area code will soon be introduced in eastern Quebec as demand for telephone numbers continues to grow.
Beginning Feb. 27, the new 273 area code will be added to the region currently served by area codes 418, 581 and 367, according to the Canadian Numbering Administrator.
The change will affect a large part of eastern Quebec, including Quebec City, Saguenay, Lévis, Trois-Rivières, Gaspé, Rimouski and the Côte-Nord region.
Officials say existing phone numbers will not change, and residents will continue using 10-digit dialing for local calls.
Customers requesting new phone service after Feb. 27, could be assigned a number with the new 273 area code.
The introduction of the new code will not affect local calling areas or emergency numbers such as 911.
