Sûreté du Québec and the Kahnawake Peacekeepers arrested a Châteauguay man for driving without licence plates and speeding more than 140 km/h above the limit early Saturday morning.
Quebec provincial police say the 23-year-old was driving a vehicle without license plates travelling on Highway 15 North, near the Samuel De Champlain Bridge.
Upon seeing the police, the driver allegedly fled the scene. He was clocked at 217 km/h on Highway 20 West – where the speed limit is 70 km/h – on Saturday around 2:30 a.m.
A high-speed pursuit by Montreal Highway Station ensued on Highway 20 West and then on Route 138 West, toward Mercier Bridge.
The Kahnawake Peacekeepers were then called for backup and located the vehicle in a parking lot of a business on their territory.
“During the operation, the suspect attempted to flee again before colliding with the officers’ vehicle, rendering his vehicle inoperable,” SQ said.
The driver was arrested and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. His driver’s licence was suspended for seven days.
The investigation is ongoing.
While there were no injuries, the SQ took the opportunity to warn drivers that speed is one of the leading causes of fatal collisions on Quebec roads.
