Orientation and mobility specialists, who work with people living with visual impairments, will be able to receive retroactive pay dating back to… 2010.
The Administrative Labour Tribunal (TAT) recently ordered the Treasury Board to pay these workers—mostly women—retroactive salary adjustments dating back to Dec. 31, 2010, with interest.
At its core, this is a disagreement over the job classification of this position in light of pay equity.
The Tribunal ruled that the physical demands and responsibilities toward individuals required for this job justified a higher salary.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees, affiliated with the FTQ, which represents some of these orientation and mobility specialists, states that the salary adjustment will be $1.87 per hour, which, since 2010, could amount to several thousand dollars per person—depending on factors such as seniority and pay grade, for example.
