The family of a Canadian man missing in the aftermath of devastating flash floods near the Nepal-Tibet border is anxiously awaiting updates on his whereabouts.
Dhaval Shah and his wife Megha Shah, residents of Port Moody, B.C., were on a spiritual voyage in Nepal when they were caught in the floods.
Kheval Shah, Dhaval’s brother based in Mumbai, India, expressed the family’s deep concern as they seek information on whether the couple has been located or rescued.
The catastrophic floods have resulted in a tragic death toll of at least 570 individuals, with reports indicating that 32 Canadians and permanent residents are currently unaccounted for in the impacted area.
Despite rescue efforts, no Canadians were among the 121 foreign nationals reported to have been saved by the Nepal Tourism Board. The missing individuals, many of whom were on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet, a revered destination for various spiritual communities, have left loved ones distraught.
In a plea for swift action, Shah urged the Canadian government to exert pressure on Nepal to provide updates and insights regarding the missing Canadians.
The last communication from Dhaval was received on Monday, with a cousin receiving word from the couple on Tuesday, leaving the family in an agonizing state of uncertainty.
Canada has pledged $5 million in urgent humanitarian aid to assist Nepal, with a focus on channeling support through organizations like the Red Cross to aid affected populations.
