A woman in Maple Ridge was recently caught sleeping at the wheel of her Tesla while driving, according to BC Highway Patrol (BCHP).
The incident, captured on video by two alert witnesses on Highway 1 near Mountain Highway in North Vancouver, showed the driver appearing to be snoozing while the car was in motion.
Following the footage provided by the witnesses, BCHP managed to locate the owner of the Tesla in Maple Ridge and issued her a ticket for driving without due care and attention.
This isn’t an isolated case. Just months earlier, a similar incident occurred when a woman was found asleep while driving on Highway 1 in Coquitlam. In another bizarre occurrence in July, a driver was spotted dozing off in a self-driving car.
Sgt. Michael McLaughlin emphasized that BC law strictly prohibits sleeping while operating a vehicle, whether it’s a self-driving car or not. The police are committed to upholding road safety and ensuring that drivers remain attentive and focused while on the road.
Driver inattention is a significant contributing factor to accidents, with McLaughlin stressing the importance of staying alert whenever behind the wheel in British Columbia.
