In a direct message to Hegseth, Anderson emphasized the importance of mutual respect between Canadians and Americans while expressing his disapproval of the U.S. defense secretary’s behavior.
Anderson highlighted Hegseth’s role as the Secretary of War for a powerful nation and criticized his lack of responsibility and decorum in targeting Canadian Cadet officers. The incident occurred when Hegseth posted a photo from the Cadet Training Centre in Vernon, featuring two female officers, accompanied by remarks that sparked controversy and backlash.
The Pentagon has defended Hegseth’s post amid ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Canada, particularly following failed trade negotiations. However, Anderson’s statement underscores the enduring relationship between the two countries and calls for respectful interaction.
The incident has drawn widespread criticism for targeting young women in the cadet program and undermining the reputation of Canada’s military. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also condemned the disparaging comments from U.S. officials, noting that such behavior is unbecoming of their positions.
