Authorities have handed over the investigation of a fatal shooting in Maple Ridge to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) following the victim’s passing nearly two weeks after the incident.
The tragic event unfolded on Aug. 18 in the quiet Cottonwood neighborhood. Local Maple Ridge RCMP responded to the scene at the intersection of 236 Street and 114A Avenue around 10 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a 56-year-old man with gunshot wounds inside a parked vehicle near a residence. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Despite medical efforts, the victim succumbed to his injuries on Aug. 31.
Authorities suspect the shooting was deliberate and confirm the victim had previous interactions with law enforcement. However, the victim’s identity has not been disclosed.
“We commend the Maple Ridge RCMP Serious Crime Unit for their diligent investigation thus far,” stated Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT.
“Following the victim’s tragic passing, IHIT is now taking the lead in the homicide case. Our investigators are collaborating closely with the victim’s loved ones to piece together his recent activities, relationships, and whereabouts leading up to the incident.”
