A fascinating discovery in northern British Columbia has captured global attention – a massive “floating island” that has recently reappeared after briefly going missing. The island, approximately 140 meters long and 70 meters wide, equivalent to the size of two football fields, made waves in major media outlets like the New York Times, BBC, National Geographic, and even TMZ, sparking curiosity worldwide.
So, what exactly is this mysterious floating island, and why are scientists so intrigued by it?
Initially reported to BC Hydro on Aug. 13, the island, covered in lush vegetation, was believed to have been spotted near Finlay Bay on Williston Reservoir on July 21. However, it mysteriously vanished from sight, only to resurface through satellite imagery along the shoreline of Ospika Arm, roughly 30 kilometers from its original location.
Although satellite imagery is not real-time, analysis revealed that the island had moved the significant distance in just two days. Community relations manager Bob Gammer expressed initial skepticism upon receiving images and videos of the floating island, emphasizing the importance of verifying unusual reports before drawing conclusions.
The island’s reappearance has piqued the interest of various researchers, including geologists and ecologists, seeking to understand the formation and movement of such floating vegetated islands. BC Hydro notes that while islands of this size are rare, they can develop in large reservoirs, possibly originating from accumulated logs and debris that foster plant growth over time.
Despite confirming the island’s location, the mystery surrounding its origin and drifting journey persists, presenting a unique opportunity for researchers to delve deeper into this natural marvel.
In the meantime, BC Hydro advises against attempting to land or climb on the island due to its unstable nature. While approaching the island by boat or drone for photographs is permitted, everyone is urged to refrain from setting foot on the floating mass itself.
