A 16-year-old teenager in Burnaby received fines totaling nearly $1,000 for allegedly evading police while riding an e-dirt bike.
According to Burnaby RCMP, a Traffic Services officer observed the young rider performing dangerous stunts and speeding down Government Road in North Burnaby on August 28.
The officer tried to pull the rider over, but the teenager reportedly swerved into oncoming traffic, disregarded a stop sign, and fled the scene. Due to safety concerns, the officer chose not to pursue the chase.
After about 25 minutes, the teenager returned to the area and was apprehended by officers. It was revealed that the rider, who possessed a Class 7 driver’s licence, was actually 16 years old. His father was notified and arrived at the scene.
The teenager was slapped with fines amounting to $938. The RCMP indicated that he could potentially face a suspension of his driver’s licence as a consequence of his actions.
Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj emphasized, “E-dirt bikes are prohibited on our roads, regardless of your age. Facing a fine and a licence suspension is a far better outcome than the serious repercussions witnessed in recent accidents involving such vehicles.”
The Burnaby RCMP is cautioning the public that the use of e-dirt bikes on public roads is illegal and violators may be subject to substantial penalties.
