The BC Highway Patrol is once again emphasizing the dangers of falling asleep while driving, following an incident where a Tesla driver was allegedly caught sleeping at the wheel. The BCHP highlighted that such instances of “sleepy drivers” are not only risky but also divert precious police resources away from other urgent calls.
In a recent event on August 27 at 7:45 a.m., a BC Highway Patrol officer, en route to a priority call, spotted a Tesla on Highway 1 near 248th Street in Langley with a man appearing to be asleep in the driver’s seat. The officer observed the man’s eyes closed and both hands off the steering wheel, prompting an immediate intervention despite the officer’s pressing duty.
Sgt. Michael McLaughlin reported, “The police officer’s observations and his Body Worn Camera footage suggested the Tesla driver was asleep, although the driver denied it.” He expressed concern over the unnecessary strain such incidents put on law enforcement resources, stating, “If drivers refrain from sleeping behind the wheel, we could better assist those in real need.”
Regarding the consequences, the Tesla driver faced fines for driving without due care and attention, amounting to $368, and for failing to present a driver’s license, with an additional fine of $81. Sgt. McLaughlin emphasized the gravity of the situation, remarking, “We cannot overlook drivers who are this inattentive. The risks of severe harm or fatalities are far too great. If you choose to drive while drowsy, be prepared to face not just a roadside stop but also financial penalties.”
