After more than 60 years of service, the iconic CT-114 Tutor jets of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds aerobatic squadron are set to retire this year. The upcoming Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) in Toronto will mark the final appearance of these classic aircraft at the renowned Canadian International Air Show (CIAS).
Major Maciej Hatta, the team lead of the Snowbirds, expressed gratitude for the CT-114 Tutor jets, stating, “This season wraps up our journey with the esteemed CT-114 Tutor, a Canadair CL-41 model that was proudly crafted in Canada, specifically in Montreal, Catrierville. These jets were manufactured between 1963 and 1965, showcasing their age, but they have been diligently maintained to meet stringent airworthiness standards.”
As the Snowbirds celebrate their 55th year at the CNE, this will be their final appearance at the event until the early 2030s. The squadron, headquartered in Moose Jaw, will temporarily cease operations until they acquire new aircraft to replace the retiring fleet.
Hatta stated, “Our plan is to return with a new aircraft, ideally sooner rather than later, and make a dynamic comeback in the near future.” The Snowbirds’ second-to-last showcase with the CT-114 Tutor jets is scheduled for the Grey Cup in Calgary this November.
The Canadian government has announced that the contemporary CT-157 Siskin II aircraft will succeed the CT-114 Tutor jets, although a specific timeline for the transition has not been disclosed.
The CIAS will feature a lineup of 15 acts, with the Snowbirds’ performance serving as the thrilling finale. The show will take place on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from 12 p.m. to 3:40 p.m.
