The Toronto Wildlife Centre is currently undergoing repairs following the aftermath of a severe storm that struck on Wednesday.
The storm brought intense winds and hail that caused significant damage to the facility located at Downsview Park in North York. Sections of the roof were lifted, numerous windows were shattered, and parts of the complex were flooded. Tragically, five recovering pigeons managed to escape when an outdoor aviary was completely demolished. Additionally, another outdoor enclosure suffered moderate damage, and a significant portion of the security fencing was knocked down.
Nathalie Karvonen, the center’s executive director, described the chaos that ensued as the storm hit unexpectedly. Despite their dedicated staff and volunteers working tirelessly during the busy animal admissions period in September, they were caught off guard by the ferocity of the storm. Karvonen emphasized that in their three decades of operation, they had never encountered such extensive damage.
Thankfully, none of the animals were harmed during the incident. The impact was mainly structural, with windows blowing in and flooding primarily occurring in non-animal areas of the center.
Aside from the physical damage to the facility, some staff members who sought shelter inside the building during the storm found that their vehicles had also been damaged by broken windows.
Volunteers have been diligently cleaning up the debris, and repair work is currently in progress. The center, which relies solely on donations, faces unexpected costs that insurance may not cover. In a plea for support, the center expressed the need for assistance from the community to help cover the repair expenses and ensure continued care for the wildlife in need.
As repairs continue, officials are hopeful that skilled tradespeople will step in to offer their expertise to expedite the process and minimize disruptions to the care provided to the animals.
