A man from Vaughan arrested in connection with a tragic hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a 60-year-old woman
York Regional Police have taken action against a Vaughan man linked to a fatal hit-and-run incident that led to the death of a 60-year-old woman earlier this month.
The victim, identified as a live-in caregiver heading to her place of work, disembarked from a bus at the intersection of Pine Valley Drive and Major Mackenzie at approximately 8:30 p.m. on October 4. As she was walking along the narrow shoulder of Pine Valley in a northbound direction, she was struck by a vehicle travelling in the same direction.
The driver of the vehicle reportedly fled from the scene, and it wasn’t until two days later, on October 6, that the woman was discovered by a passerby who noticed one of her belongings, a suitcase, by the side of the road before 3 p.m.
Thanks to security footage provided by the public and vehicle fragments found at the scene, authorities were able to identify the vehicle responsible for the collision as a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van.
On Friday, Kamel Hazime, a 41-year-old man from Vaughan, was apprehended and charged with failure to stop after an accident that resulted in the death of the victim. The vehicle involved in the incident is still at large.
Hazime’s picture has been made public, and investigators urge anyone who may have had interactions with him regarding a damaged Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van to reach out to the police.
