Experience a virtual ride on Metro Vancouver’s transit system with a special virtual Compass pass, thanks to Julian Lam, a talented high school graduate from the North Shore. Over the past three years, Lam has dedicated his time to recreating the intricate SkyTrain network on the popular online gaming platform, Roblox.
Initially, Lam’s creation was basic, lacking details like transit stickers and safety warnings. However, with each ride on the SkyTrain, he gathered inspiration, capturing new elements through photos and incorporating them into his virtual world as intricate details and decals.
With dedication and creativity, the 18-year-old has meticulously constructed a comprehensive system of lines and stops, enhancing the immersive experience for players. To add authenticity, Lam even obtained official station announcement files through a freedom of information request to replicate the familiar train station announcements in his virtual world.
Through his endeavors, Lam has cultivated a community of over 300,000 global gamers who have explored his rendition of the Expo Line, offering a unique glimpse of Vancouver through his eyes.
What began as a personal project has evolved into a nostalgic link to his hometown for Lam, who now resides in Toronto for his studies. Despite the distance, his virtual creation serves as a reminder of home, providing comfort amid moments of homesickness.
