Parent Groups Rally Across Ontario Against Proposed Speed Camera Ban
Parent groups in Ontario are gearing up for rallies across the province on Monday to oppose a potential ban on speed cameras. Premier Doug Ford recently announced plans to introduce a bill that would prohibit the use of these cameras, sparking concerns among parents about road safety.
Tom Devito, along with his wife Danielle, is leading one of the rallies in Toronto’s Junction neighbourhood. Devito emphasizes that as a parent, his top priority is ensuring the safety of children on the roads. He expressed his dismay, stating that he was “outraged” upon learning of the government’s intention to ban speed cameras, citing their proven effectiveness in safeguarding children.
Numerous mayors and school boards, representing over 20 municipalities, have urged Premier Ford to reconsider and improve the speed camera program instead of eliminating it entirely. They argue that this technology plays a crucial role in protecting children from potential road hazards.
Studies conducted by various municipalities, including research from the Hospital for Sick Children and Toronto Metropolitan University, have shown that speed cameras contribute to a reduction in traffic speeds, further highlighting their importance in promoting road safety.
