Travellers at Billy Bishop Airport faced disruptions due to a sudden power outage on Monday afternoon. An outage map from Hydro Toronto indicated a power issue near the airport, with an expected restoration time of 3:21 p.m.
Ports Toronto, the airport operator, acknowledged the outage and clarified that it was confined to the tunnel due to a problem with a Toronto Hydro feed. Despite reduced capacity in the tunnel, the terminal remained unaffected, and flights were operating as usual.
The electric ferry service, including the Marilyn Bell ferry, was temporarily halted due to the inability to charge the vessel. A backup fuel-based ferry was brought in as a replacement.
Security personnel at the airport informed 680 NewsRadio’s Kerry Prunskus that the airport was relying on a backup generator, resulting in limited elevator and escalator services and causing significant line-ups.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.
