In response to safety concerns, the Quebec government has approved the provision of firearms to traffic controllers. Over the years, these professionals have faced threats and aggression while carrying out their duties, prompting calls for increased protection.
Highlighting the risks faced by road inspectors, the Administrative Labour Tribunal (TAT) emphasized the unsafe work conditions and the need for improved safety measures. Administrative Judge Danielle Tremblay noted that the existing weapons provided to road inspectors were inadequate for their protection during interventions.
As a result of the Tribunal’s decision, unplanned interventions by road inspectors have been temporarily suspended to address safety issues. Traffic controllers will now undergo specialized training before being permitted to carry firearms, and workplaces will be upgraded to ensure secure storage facilities for the weapons.
In addition to firearms, the government has explored the possibility of equipping traffic controllers with stun guns as an alternative option. Currently, Quebec has a total of 300 highway patrol officers.
