B.C. Government Boosts Respiratory Virus Vaccine Efforts, Surpassing Last Year’s Numbers

The Ministry of Health in British Columbia has announced a successful start to this year’s vaccination campaign, with a higher number of individuals already vaccinated in the first week compared to the previous year.

As of October 19, nearly 275,000 people have received the influenza vaccine, showing an increase from 254,000 individuals vaccinated by the same time last year.

The COVID-19 vaccination numbers are also on the rise, with 215,000 individuals already vaccinated this year compared to 158,000 at the end of the first week in 2024.

The ministry has prioritized certain at-risk groups for vaccination, including adults aged 65 and older, pregnant individuals, residents of long-term care facilities, Indigenous communities, and those with chronic health conditions. Health-care workers and frontline workers are also encouraged to get vaccinated to protect themselves and those at higher risk.

Fall marks the beginning of the respiratory virus season in British Columbia, with an increase in viral respiratory illnesses like influenza, RSV, and COVID-19. Dr. Martin Lavoie, the deputy provincial health officer, emphasized the importance of protecting oneself and loved ones during this time.

Individuals outside the at-risk groups are advised to schedule their vaccination appointments starting in early November. Those not yet registered in the Get Vaccinated system can easily sign up online or by calling the provided number.

Vaccination appointments are available at health authority clinics, over 1,200 participating pharmacies, and select primary-care providers’ offices across the province.

Minister of Health Josie Osborne highlighted the significance of vaccination in safeguarding the community and preventing strain on the healthcare system.

The government has secured ample doses of the influenza and COVID-19 vaccines for the current year, with vaccines being provided free of charge to the public.
