“Overwhelming Approval: BC Ferries’ Decision to Construct Ships in China Wins Big in Latest CityNews Poll”

A recent poll shows strong support for the BC Ferries’ deal with a Chinese shipbuilder to acquire four new vessels, despite initial backlash. The survey, conducted by Canada Pulse Insights and CityNews, revealed that over 70% of residents in and around Vancouver are in favor of moving forward with the agreement.

Canada Pulse Insights CEO John Wright highlighted the overwhelming response, noting that three-quarters of the population in Vancouver and its neighboring areas prefer to push ahead with the contract rather than seeking a made-in-Canada alternative.

Sechelt Mayor John Henderson emphasized the urgent need for new ferries, particularly for communities like his on the Sunshine Coast that heavily rely on the service. He pointed out the deteriorating condition of the current fleet, with one vessel clocking over 100,000 hours on its engines, underscoring the necessity for timely replacement.

Despite concerns raised by some critics, the decision to proceed with the shipbuilding deal is seen as a crucial long-term investment for the region. While potential future challenges are acknowledged, the current strong political support for the initiative, notably from BC Premier David Eby, is seen as a significant factor in ensuring its success.
