The contenders vying for the NDP leadership are diligently brushing up on their French language proficiency ahead of the inaugural debate scheduled for Nov. 27 in Montreal.
While the candidates exhibit varying levels of French language skills, none have claimed fluency in both English and French. Recognizing the importance of being conversant in both official languages of the country, they are committed to strengthening their French abilities to effectively lead a national party.
The lineup of candidates includes documentarian Avi Lewis, Alberta MP Heather McPherson, union leader Rob Ashton, social worker Tanille Johnston, and organic farmer Tony McQuail.
During a recent NDP leadership forum, Lewis impressed by answering the first question in French, although a campaign spokesperson noted that he is not fully bilingual yet.
Former NDP strategist Karl Belanger warns that the next leader may encounter difficulties garnering support in Quebec without proficient French language skills.
