“Speed Cameras to Vanish Across Ontario as New Legislation Gets Green Light!”

Ontario to Remove Speed Cameras Amid Controversy Over Traffic Safety Measures

Ontario is gearing up to say goodbye to speed cameras in just two weeks as Premier Doug Ford’s government recently made the decision to ban them. The move comes amidst a debate on the effectiveness of these cameras in slowing down drivers.

Premier Ford has long been vocal about his skepticism towards speed cameras, claiming they are ineffective in promoting safer driving habits. On the other hand, studies conducted by municipalities and researchers from the Hospital for Sick Children have suggested otherwise. Ford believes that implementing measures such as speed bumps, roundabouts, and prominent signage with flashing lights will prove to be more impactful in curbing speeding.

However, the timeline for when these alternative measures will be rolled out remains uncertain. Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria mentioned that temporary and improved signage will be installed in areas previously monitored by speed cameras. Collaboration with municipalities is ongoing to explore additional traffic calming measures in the coming weeks.

While the government plans to assist municipalities in adopting speed bumps, raised crosswalks, and roundabouts through a new fund, the exact amount of financial support has yet to be disclosed. The impending removal of speed cameras has raised concerns among opposition leaders, with NDP Leader Marit Stiles emphasizing the importance of ensuring pedestrian safety during this transition period.

Critics, including Liberal parliamentary leader John Fraser, have expressed apprehension over the removal of speed cameras, citing evidence from various sources that support their effectiveness in enhancing community safety. The decision to ban speed cameras was expedited through a red tape reduction bill, prompting accusations of disregarding expert advice and public input.

Premier Ford’s decision to eliminate speed cameras follows a series of incidents where automated cameras were vandalized in Toronto. Despite the controversy surrounding the move, the government remains resolute in its stance on the issue.
