Truck drivers will be required to undergo mandatory training to obtain a license starting next month.
Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility Jonatan Julien, announced Friday that those seeking a Class 1 driver’s license, required to operate heavy vehicles, will need to attend the required training starting Dec. 15.
“This mandatory training will ensure greater safety on our roads and address the issue of unlicensed drivers,” Julien said in a statement. “Future heavy vehicle drivers will be better trained in safe behaviors to respond to various risky situations.”
“The consequences of accidents involving heavy vehicles are often serious because of their weight and size,” said Annie Lafond, acting president and CEO of the Quebec’s auto insurance board SAAQ.
In a press release, SAAQ noted that the new requirement only applies to new applications. Those with a valid Class 1 license are not required to take the mandatory training.
