McGill University has announced the difficult decision to cut 25 sports teams, including track and field, women’s rugby, and men’s volleyball, after the 2025-26 season. The university conducted a thorough review process involving internal and external stakeholders before making this move, citing sustainability concerns.
U Sports CEO Pierre Arsenault expressed empathy for the affected student-athletes and coaches, recognizing the challenges of balancing academic and athletic commitments. McGill’s decision was influenced by audits and reviews highlighting the unsustainability of the current sports structure.
Athletics Canada and Athletism Quebec expressed disappointment over the decision, emphasizing its broader impact on Canadian track and field development. McGill’s unique facilities, such as the indoor banked running track, play a crucial role in national athlete development.
Despite the disappointment, there is hope for a possible reinstatement of some programs, depending on RSEQ exemptions. U Sports emphasizes the need for continued awareness and support for university sports, highlighting their impact on student-athletes and youth development.
