Montreal Transforms Iconic Cinéma Paradis Site into Hub for Affordable Housing

The City of Montreal is set to acquire the abandoned former Cinéma Paradis property in the Tétreaultville sector of the eastern island. This move, made possible through the city’s right of first refusal, will lead to the demolition of the derelict building at 8215 Hochelaga Street and the transfer of the land to a non-profit organization.

Mayor Chantal Gagnon of the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough expressed relief at the resolution of the longstanding issue, emphasizing the restoration of the area’s reputation by removing the neglected cinema that has plagued residents for over 15 years.

Originally owned by Angelo Guzzo and later sold to Investissements Denmar Inc., the property has faced numerous failed redevelopment attempts over the years. The Executive Committee, represented by Caroline Braun, announced plans for deconstruction to commence by 2027, with a focus on accelerating housing construction, aiding families and seniors, maintaining social diversity, and easing the burden on non-profit organizations.

Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada highlighted the city’s dedication to addressing the housing crisis by repurposing the site for affordable and social housing. The acquisition is seen as a significant step towards utilizing the vacant space effectively and meeting the community’s pressing need for accessible housing.
