The Eglinton Crosstown LRT Clears Final Test as Opening Approaches
After successfully completing a crucial 30-day testing period known as the revenue service demonstration, the Eglinton Crosstown LRT in Ontario is one step closer to opening its doors to the public. The project, which has spanned 14 years, is now moving towards substantial completion and will soon be handed over to the TTC for operation.
The Line 6 Finch West LRT, a similar project, is set to open this Sunday following its own successful testing phase. However, the exact opening date for the Line 5 Eglinton Crosstown remains unspecified at this time.
Metrolinx president and CEO Michael Lindsay provided an update on the commissioning progress, noting that final training and testing in various weather conditions are still underway to ensure the system’s reliability and safety.
Despite progress, concerns have been raised regarding transparency surrounding the project. Union representatives, including ATU Local 113 president Marvin Alfred and Toronto Coun. Josh Matlow, have called for more clarity and accountability. They are urging for greater disclosure of information and safety measures to prevent future incidents.
The Eglinton Crosstown LRT, which began construction in 2011 and faced delays due to legal, construction, and pandemic-related challenges, is now on the verge of completion, with stakeholders emphasizing the importance of transparency and safety in its operations.
