“Global Tribunal in Montreal to Probe Tragic Deaths of Indigenous Children This May”

The Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal (PPT) is set to conduct an opinion tribunal in Montreal in May 2026 to delve into Canada’s involvement in the deaths and disappearances of Indigenous children.

Organized by the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal, this tribunal aims to ascertain whether Canada is guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity, drawing from a substantial collection of approximately 2,000 pieces of evidence.

Kwetiio, a member of the Mohawk Mothers, expressed, “We are leading this initiative with a focus on healing rather than seeking apologies.”

Reflecting on the traumatic experiences prevalent in her community, Kwetiio highlighted the haunting impact of a child who returned from “the hospital” with irreversible changes, serving as a grim reminder of the suffering endured by her people.

Canadian Senator and prominent Indigenous leader Michèle Audette emphasized the significance of this grassroots tribunal as a platform for marginalized voices to finally be heard, stressing its potential to bring about meaningful change within Canadian society.

The Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal, established in 1979 to denounce dictatorial regimes in Latin America, will convene from May 25 to 29, 2026 at the daphne art centre in Montreal. The proceedings will feature witness testimonies, legal arguments, and deliberations leading to the Tribunal’s final verdict.
