Quebec Liberals Defend $1,000 Payments to Key Volunteers, Claim Full Compliance in Rodriguez’s Leadership Race

The Quebec Liberal Party faces scrutiny over $1,000 bank transfers.

In response to recent reports, the party has clarified that transfers of $1,000 were made to select party employees who dedicated significant volunteer hours to supporting Pablo Rodriguez’s leadership campaign.

The Journal de Montréal revealed that Élections Québec is investigating these transfers to 14 individuals who played key roles in Rodriguez’s bid for party leadership, including Geneviève Hinse, former chief of staff to expelled Liberal caucus member Marwah Rizqy.

These transactions were disclosed in an expense report from Rodriguez’s successful campaign.

According to a statement by Rodriguez’s financial representative Jean-Claude Lévesque, the surplus funds from the campaign were initially intended to be transferred to the Quebec Liberal Party. However, regulations prohibited this action, leading to the decision to distribute $1,000 bank transfers to those who contributed the most volunteer hours.

Lévesque emphasized that all recipients of these transfers will be issued T4A slips and are required to report the amount as income on their tax returns.

He further asserted that Rodriguez’s leadership campaign adhered to all legal requirements and guidelines.
